I love to read (major understatement), but I struggle with writing. Always have. I would have loved to have been an English or a history or a philosophy major but the writing always intimidated me. So, I became a math major.
Plain math majors can do 1 of 3 things – become a high school math teacher (no thank you), pursue higher mathematics and teach at the college level (they seriously lost me at basic linear algebra – and never found me), or become an actuary (tried that and cardboard is more exciting).
I decided to become a teacher. Everyone thought I would be a math teacher, but teaching math didn’t excite me. I enjoy math, but not teaching it.
I remembered how much I loved the elementary school read aloud program I started in college, and chose to teach elementary school. When I did my student teaching in a first grade classroom, I fell in love with watching kids learn how to read and write. During my first year teaching in Denver, I had fourth graders that read at a first grade level. Even teaching math was a struggle because they could not read the word problems. My focus had to be on literacy and I found my true calling. Seriously. I was always envious of those who could sing like a diva, draw anything beyond a basic stick figure, or write words that move people. Those gifts are for others. My gift is teaching kids how to read and write.
I teach Kindergarten now and LOVE my job. After my very first day in this new grade level I declared, “I was born to do this.”
Beyond teaching, I am married to one of the most patient men on this earth. We have two amazing boys who are my life. They are smart, funny, and talented. Sure all parents say their kids are smart, but I KNOW mine really are! I’m serious!! I also love to read (specifically I’m a Jane Austen fanatic), take pictures of my boys, cross stitch, and spend time with my family on Nantucket.
OK, so why did I start this blog if I hate (oops struggle with) writing? Well, we’ll just have to figure that out as we go along.
